Exploring the serpent spine as the central axis of power in the animal body: ancient movements that we share with all of our living relatives, holding the memories of the environments that our ancestors have moved through since the beginning of time.
Practices of directing the breath into the central channel at every vertebral segment, to increase sensitivity and fill the body with joyful awareness, revealing the hidden world of interactions between the bodily tension, breath, emotions, and the mind, rippling up and down the centreline in every moment: the "subtle body" of the Yogic traditions.

SERPENT SPINE - ANIMAL BODY: Ancestral Movement Immersion on the Sunshine Coast, QLD, April 18-20
A long weekend at the Hillier Retreat on the Sunny Coast exploring movement and awareness practices and the evolutionary anatomy of the human body.
Serpent Spine: Exercises to gain conscious voluntary movement throughout the entire central axis of the body, front and back, outside and inside. Every articulation of the spine and ribcage, every muscular segment of abdomen, the pelvic floor, the throat and the skull. Learning to send the breath to every segment of the spine and torso, massaging deep tensions out of the centre of the body and exploring the links between movement, posture, breath, emotion, the mind and the senses, massively expanding our range of possible postures, movements and breathing patterns.
Animal Body: From the opening of the anatomical central axis we discover ancestral movement patterns shared with all other creatures on the earth. Fish, lizards, mammals and other primates. Exploring qualities of the animal body: softness, strength, elasticity, balance, agility, coordination, reflexes. Locomotion patterns, partner games, making the whole body and all of the senses come alive, engaging with the landscape with the body.
This will be a fully catered camping event. It is open to anyone interested in moving and feeling their bodies more deeply, and connecting to the natural world through physical practice. All of the practices are challenging but can be safely scaled according to individual needs and abilities.

CANBERRA: Serpent Spine - Animal Body
A two-day introductory workshop in Ancestral Movement, exploring movement patterns and innate in the body due to our long evolutionary heritage, which form the basis of all human movement and which allow us to feel on a physical level our deep connections to the rest of our living family on the Earth.
Participants are welcome to attend either day separately, or both.

SERPENT SPINE - BELLINGEN NSW
WORKSHOP IN BELLINGEN ON MARCH 1ST
A full-day event of the same kind as I've been doing in the northern rivers for the last couple of years.
"Axis of Awakening" will explore the Serpent Spine as the central axis of physical movement, of strength, expression, sensitivity and connection. Connection with our shifting internal emotional landscape, empathic connection with the internal landscapes of other people, connection with deep time and the whole of our biological lineage stretching back into the inconceivably ancient past, and connection to the entire infinite living world all around us continuously in present moment.
We will practice movements to develop voluntary control and clear awareness of each and every segment of the spine. Releasing tension, learning to send sensitive and powerful muscular waves through all the deep spaces of the spine, the abdomen, the ribcage, the pelvic floor and the throat, rediscovering in the central axis the beautiful ancient undulating anatomy of the animal body.
Practices to develop flowing, spontaneous movement through space, training the spine and torso to work effortlessly with the eyes and the limbs, developing serious strength, elasticity and intelligence in the legs and feet.
Directing the breath to individual spinal segments to massage out deep held internal tensions so breath can flow freely without inhibition through the entire torso. Making the breath smooth and subtle to induce states of profound alertness and relaxation, to saturate the insides of the body with warm awareness, to feel the insides of the body responding in real time to the activities of the mind and the living world outside.
Links between body awareness, posture, breathing, physical tension and movement with different patterns of emotion, the expression of character, empathy and nonverbal communication, social and ecological awareness. Discussions of the relevant neuroscience of mind-body practice and links to traditional practices from around the world.

Serpent Spine: Awakening the Central Axis
We've just moved back to Northern NSW! Back into running regular classes and workshops, starting with this one on November 16th.
A full day of movement, breathing and sensitivity practices exploring the spine and central axis to progressively develop full muscular control of the whole spine, awareness of internal physiological processes and mind-body interactions.
Solo and partner exercises to release chronic tension, induce conscious movement and increase sensation through each vertebral segment, every articulation of the ribcage, the hidden internal muscular spaces of the abdomen, neck, skull, and pelvic floor.
Exploring the serpent spine as the central engine of the “animal body”: how the undulating movements of the body centre transfer force through the limbs into the ground to move through space.
Ancient and powerful movements which we share with the rest of the animal kingdom, that connect us to all of the environments that our ancestors have moved through over the aeons, and that are still the foundations of all human movement.
Practices of directing the breath into the central axis of the body at every segment, to calm and smooth the breath to increase sensitivity and fill the body with joy, opening the deepest centre of our being to conscious awareness to reveal the hidden world of interactions between the breath, emotions, and the mind, rippling up and down the centreline in every moment: the "subtle body" of the Yogic traditions.
This workshop is open to anyone who wants to move their body more and feel it more deeply. No prior experience necessary. The practices are safe, useful for relief of both acute and chronic pain, for changing posture, improving breathing capacity, relieving abdominal discomfort, massaging the internal organs, for whole-body strength and coordination, for improving all forms of athletic movement and generally becoming more expressive with our bodies.
